Wellbeing In the Nation
Wellbeing In the Nation (WIN) is a multi-sector strategy to stimulate community wellbeing and population health by aligning the economic and social drivers for health. Since its launch in 2008, WIN has fueled national and local investments that spread successful models of community wellbeing and population health, lowering costs and empowering patients to take charge of their own health.
On June 2–4, 2016 WIN is convening experts and leaders in philanthropy, business, military, faith, tech and local and national policy to develop a set of strategic recommendations that promote healthier communities, improve health outcomes, and change the social construct towards true health and wellness. Participants will develop an action plan to shift the nation’s focus and investments toward increasing total population health and community wellbeing.
The primary outcomes of the June WIN meeting are three-fold:
- a white paper with recommendations to the nation for aligning social and economic/asset drivers through its communities to accelerate total population health and spread community wellbeing
- an action plan for communicating to leaders from diverse communities including finance, business, healthcare, community development, education, technology, population health, faith, defense and veterans, and public policy
- a leadership group willing to work collectively to support the translation of this plan into public communication and policy
Samueli Institute has taken an active role in the national conversation about health care reform, and ensured that WIN was closely aligned with other efforts to create a healthier nation, including Healthy People 2010; the Institute of Medicine’s reports on health care quality, transformation, and integrative medicine; and the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy report.
By convening experts from multiple sectors, WIN can also prevent the looming fiscal disaster in our health care system. Coordinating to effectively address preventable, chronic illness and create a productive, self-care society is our only long-term hope for changing a system that, despite recent reforms, costs too much and delivers too little care to too few people.
