The Samu Eli Institute conducts and publishes research across a wide range of topics in military and veteran health.
Our published work informs clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners working to improve care for those who serve and have served. It spans clinical trials, systematic reviews, observational studies, and policy analyses.
The sections below outline the areas in which we publish.
Traumatic Brain Injury
We publish on the mechanisms, detection, and treatment of brain injury in military and veteran populations. Topics include the neurological effects of blast exposure, the cumulative consequences of repeated sub concussive injury, and the role of integrative and nutritional interventions in supporting cognitive recovery.
Post-Traumatic Stress
Our published work in this area covers the neurobiology of combat trauma, the efficacy of mind-body therapies, and the role of social support in long-term psychological health. It also includes investigation into integrative approaches for veterans who have not responded to first-line treatments.
Pain Management and Opioid Alternatives
We publish on non-pharmacological approaches to pain in military and veteran care. Topics include battlefield acupuncture, integrative pain programs in VA settings, and the prescribing patterns that have contributed to opioid dependence in the post-deployment population.
Nutrition and Neurological Health
Our work in this area examines how dietary interventions affect brain health, mood, and cognitive performance in service members. A significant focus has been the role of omega-3 fatty acids in neuroprotection, mood regulation, and recovery from brain injury.
