Complementary Medicine and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health condition that significantly impairs quality of life and is often resistant to conventional treatment approaches. This analysis examines the potential role of complementary medicine approaches in the management of OCD symptoms.

The review evaluates evidence for various complementary approaches including mindfulness-based interventions, herbal remedies, nutritional supplementation, acupuncture, and mind-body practices as adjunctive treatments for OCD. Particular attention is given to approaches that may address the anxiety, repetitive thinking, and stress components of the disorder.

Preliminary evidence suggests that mindfulness-based interventions and certain nutritional approaches may provide modest benefits for OCD symptom management, particularly when combined with evidence-based conventional treatments including cognitive-behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy.

This review supports the careful, evidence-informed integration of complementary approaches within comprehensive OCD treatment plans, while emphasizing the need for larger controlled trials to establish efficacy and safety.
