Healing the heart: a randomized pilot study of a spiritual retreat for depression in acute coronary syndrome patients

Healing the Heart: Spiritual Retreat for Depression in Cardiac Patients

Depression frequently co-occurs with acute coronary syndrome and significantly worsens cardiovascular outcomes. This randomized pilot study evaluates a novel spiritual retreat intervention designed to address depressive symptoms in patients following acute coronary events.

The intervention combined spiritual reflection, guided meditation, therapeutic community support, and psychoeducation within a structured retreat format. Participants in the spiritual retreat group were compared with those receiving standard cardiac rehabilitation regarding changes in depressive symptoms, spiritual wellbeing, and cardiac outcomes.

Results demonstrated improvements in depressive symptoms and spiritual wellbeing among retreat participants, along with trends toward improved cardiovascular risk markers. The findings suggest that addressing the spiritual and emotional dimensions of cardiac recovery may enhance traditional rehabilitation approaches.

This pilot study supports larger trials of spiritual and integrative interventions for cardiac patients with comorbid depression, contributing to more comprehensive approaches to cardiovascular rehabilitation that address the whole person.
