Evaluation of a mindfulness-based intervention (MBSR) in migraine patients

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) for Migraine

Migraine is a common neurological disorder with significant impact on quality of life, and many patients seek complementary approaches alongside conventional treatment. This randomized controlled trial evaluates Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as an intervention for migraine patients.

The MBSR program included eight weekly sessions of guided meditation, body scan techniques, gentle yoga, and instruction in mindful awareness practices. Outcomes measured included migraine frequency, intensity, duration, medication use, and quality of life.

Results demonstrated significant reductions in migraine frequency and intensity among MBSR participants compared to controls, along with improvements in perceived stress, pain catastrophizing, and overall quality of life. Benefits were maintained at follow-up assessments.

These findings support the inclusion of mindfulness-based interventions as a complementary component of comprehensive migraine management, addressing the stress-related and psychological factors that contribute to migraine chronification.
